Designers and engineers at Nike’s US headquarters have been working on an updated version of the successful Flyknit Lunar, which is characterised by two key innovations that together offer a fluid yet supportive run.

Runners by no means experience a lack of choice when it comes to purchasing new running shoes. Manufacturers constantly launch new designs offering all variety of features that promise to give them the most comfortable and supportive run. Nike is no different and having only launched its Flyknit Lunar shoe last year, it’s back with an updated version.

The key enhancement with this new design is combining the innovative Flyknit surface on top, which stretches to form a sock-like fit with virtually no seams, with a cushioned foam on the bottom.

“The Flyknit Lunar2 brings two of our best innovations and technologies together in one package. You get the responsive, fluid ride of Lunarlon cushioning with this amazing, light but supportive upper through Flyknit. Those two things together are a magical combination,” comments Rob Dolan, senior design director, Nike Running.

The Lunarlon cushioning features a soft, resilient foam core encased within a supportive foam carrier. Nike claim this invention is 30 per cent lighter than traditional Phylon with the force of impact being more evenly distributed and also helping to reduce painful pressure points on the foot.

“With the Lunarlon cushioning we spent a lot of time looking at pressure map data of runners running in the shoes,” says Dolan. “We would then apply that data to the lunar foam in a way that not only enhances the cushioning properties of it but provided a new way of delivering flexibility to the runner to further build upon this fluid, soft ride that Lunar is known for.”

Flyknit Lunar2 is now available to buy online and in stores and can be customised in a range of colours to suit the runner. However, by the sounds of it, the Nike designers are hard at work in the design studio busying themselves on the next designs: “We are on this path towards the future of a smarter way of building a running shoe – a way of engineering every single surface and building all the functionality in without any compromise,” says Dolan.
