Inspired by British Special Forces training, it consists of a 10–12 mile military-style obstacle course designed to test a person’s strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork.

Having read the book Change by Design – by Tim Brown, the CEO of IDEO – Tough Mudder’s
co-founder Will Dean decided that this product design consultancy would be just the design team for the job.
“I like all the obstacles we designed for different reasons but I especially like the North Poles concept, which tests participants’ strength and mental grit by having them climb across frozen poles pumped with ice water to a centre platform that then hits them with high-pressured cold water. It’s a challenge we haven’t seen in any other obstacle race and is conceived to be breathtaking, hand-numbing and awakening at the same time,” say the designers.
