Citing that the design of gravestones has barely changed for thousands of years, the designers believe that “objects and spaces for burials” have been neglected by modern architecture and design. Seeyou is an attempt to create a gravestone that combines traditional elements with contemporary design and materials whilst maintaining the customary dignity and formality.

Seeyou is quite simply a utilitarian rectangular concrete block with a smooth sculptured recess in the shape of a curved cross. This inspired concept reverses the typical convex or three-dimensional gravestone cross to create a gently curved concave form.

Utilising the cross shape was appropriate to the designers as it is both a universally recognisable symbol with “traditional meanings and timeless values” and a representation of the human form.

Underpinning the designers’ notion that Seeyou is “not done yet” is the idea that it is designed to interact with people, nature and time to enhance and embellish its appearance.

The stones’ susceptibility to weather ensures that rain, snow and leaves can gather in the recessed cross causing a constant state of flux. That the concrete can show signs of age and be vulnerable to nature are part of the concept.

The pooled water in the recessed cross is an important consequence as it encourages both literal and figurative reflection. It mirrors the onlooker, or ‘descendant’, and the surroundings and this, in turn, encourages contemplation and thought.

For the designers, concrete is a successful material on a number of levels, including its heaviness, durability and resistance to damage and neglect, and the sculptural possibilities: “…from fluid to solid, allowing for the production of complex forms”. And despite its apparent austere modernity and solidity, the idea is that concrete allows a “fluidity, stylishness and panache”.

The IVANKA Studio, founded in 2004 by of Katalin and Andras Ivanka, is no stranger to concrete, having used it to create products from basins and benches to walls and stairs. Kucsera-Maurer Strategic Design Consultancy was created by Ákos Maurer Klimes and Péter Kucsera, two designers who have worked together since graduating.

Both IVANKA Studio and Kucsera-Maurer Strategic Design Consultancy made their debut at the Milan Design week with Seeyou.
